Users: Election riding boundaries often change resulting in riding name changes as well as confusion for voters. Instead of creating an alphabetical list of all the names of the election ridings as it had been been done in previous municipal elections, I proposed an interactive map feature to simplify the ease and access of finding one's election riding.
Design Goal: Design and build an interactive map of municipal election ridings within a pre-determined UI space that is normally set aside for a headline image and ensure that it can be embedded within the existing news publishing framework and design system.
Result: I created an interactive map using Google Maps and a custom kml file to create a colour-coded map of all the municipal election ridings for Metro Vancouver. The map helped voters quickly identify their riding by using colour-coded overlays as a visual cue without having to know the name of riding that they belong to. A user was able to select their respective riding from the map instead of a long, non-dynamic alphabetical list by clicking on the desired overlay on the map. The user can then view information about their riding, candidate information as well as information on where to vote in their riding.
